About Northern Ireland

Situated in the northeast of the island of Ireland, Northern Ireland shares a border to the south and west with the Republic of Ireland. It boasts spectacular scenery, most notably the basalt columns of the Giant's Causeway, lush glens, and rugged coastlines.

History

Northern Ireland was created in 1921 when Ireland was partitioned. While the rest of Ireland gained independence, the six northeastern counties opted to remain part of the United Kingdom. This led to decades of complex political and sectarian conflict known as "The Troubles."

The signing of the Good Friday Agreement in 1998 brought peace to the region and established a power-sharing devolved government, paving the way for economic growth and a boom in tourism.
